Oral Hygiene & Periodontal Care

Our mouths are full of bacteria. Bacteria along with mucus and other particles constantly form a sticky, colourless plaque on our teeth that causes decay and gum disease. Plaque that are not removed hardens and become calculus (tartar). This layer of calculus in turns provide a safe haven for bacteria to hide and form an oral disease called periodontal disease.

The first signs of periodontal disease is gingivitis where symptoms such as bleeding from the gums, redness and swelling occur. As the disease prolongs, the bone and ligament around the teeth are destroyed and the gums starts to recede, this is called Periodontitis. Periodontitis in it’s advanced stages result in mobile (loose) teeth so severe, they would need to be extracted.

Our team of Oral Health Therapists and Hygienists aim to preserve your teeth and establish good periodontal health. Each visit to the Hygienist (3, 4 or 6 months depending on the status of our oral health) will include the removal of plaque, calculus deposits, dietary discussions and oral hygiene instructions. Where Periodontitis is present, your hygienist may recommend a series of `deep cleans` to eradicate the gross build up underneath the gums. Your hygienist will update you on your progress and reinforce your motivation and guide you to better manage your plaque deposits with various home care recommendations.

Our goal is to control the inflammation, treat and manage oral diseases and educate you to ensure you keep your teeth for life!
